Explore hue relationships with the color wheel
The Color Wheel places a selected HEX color within a circular map of hues and shows established relationships around it. Use the visual layout to compare neighboring colors, opposites and evenly spaced combinations before developing a palette.
Using the color wheel
Choose a color with the picker or enter a HEX value. The wheel rotates to make that color the reference point, while the harmony control lets you switch between different geometric relationships.
The wheel and accompanying swatches update together. You can inspect and copy the calculated HEX colors, then adjust the base color or relationship to explore another direction.
How a color wheel works
A color wheel arranges hues by their angle around a circle. Nearby positions are closely related in hue, the position directly opposite is complementary, and evenly spaced points create relationships such as triadic or square arrangements.
This tool visualizes complementary, analogous, analogous plus complementary, triadic, split-complementary, tetradic and square patterns. Their positions provide a repeatable starting point, while the final balance and use of each color remain design choices.
Compare the same relationships as palette swatches in Color Harmonies.
Practical uses for a color wheel
The circular view is useful when the relationship between colors matters as much as their individual values.
- Explore several palette directions from one known color.
- Locate opposing hues when you want clear hue contrast.
- Find neighboring hues for closely related combinations.
- Compare candidates before developing a broader interface or brand theme.
